INBAR improves the well-being of producers and users of bamboo and rattan within the context of a sustainable resource base by coordinating and supporting strategic and adaptive research and development.
Bamboo is versatile with a short growth cycle. It can be harvested in 3-5 years versus 10-50 years for most softwoods and hardwoods. Bamboo is the fastest growing plant on this planet. It grows one third faster than the fastest growing tree. Some species grow as much as four feet a day. Thanks to its rapid growth, the yield (weight per acreage and year) is up to 25 times higher than that of timber.
The ABS was formed in 1979 and today we have over 1,400 members living throughout the U.S. and in 37 other countries. The ABS issues a bimonthly Magazine and the Journal to disseminate information about the use, care, propagation and beauty of bamboo.

The research of this section is aimed at developing, improving and analysis of bamboo structures for lower income groups in developing countries. The self sufficiency of developing countries can easily be increased by smart utilization of their indigenous materials. Among these materials, bamboo is a familiar one with a long history of usefulness. In building it is employed in South East Asia for housing and scaffolding. The role of bamboo in building, particularly in structural applications, can be further developed. This is the aim of our section.
